Onceuponatime,therewasanoldmanwhousedtogotothebeachtowalk.Oneday,hewaswalkingalongthebeachwhenhesawayoungman.

从前，有一位老人经常去海边散步。有一天他正在散步时，看到了一个年轻人。

Theyoungmanwasreachingdowntotheshore,pickingupsomethingandgentlythrowingitintotheocean.

年轻人在海滩上不断俯下身，捡起什么东西，并轻轻地扔到海里去。

Ashegotclosertheoldmancalledoutandasked,“Goodmorning,Son!Whatareyoudoing?”

当老人走近了，他大声地问年轻人：“早上好啊，孩子。你在干什么啊？”

Theyoungmanpaused,lookedupandreplied,“Throwingstarfishintotheocean.Thesunisup,thetideisgoingout.IfIdon’tthrowthemin,theywilldie.”

年轻人停下来，抬头回答道：“把海星扔到海里去。太阳马上升起来了，海潮就要退了。如果我不把他们扔进海里，他们会死掉的。”

Theoldmansaid,“But,youngman,don’tyourealizetherearemilesandmilesofbeach,andstarfishallalongit?Youcan’tpossiblymakeadifference!”

老人说道：“不过，孩子，你可知道这里有数千英里海滩，到处都布满了海星啊！你这样做起不了什么作用的！”

Theyoungmansmiled,pickedanotherstarfish,threwitintotheoceanandsaid,“Nowitmadeadifferenceforthatone!”

年轻人笑了笑，又捡起了一只海星把它扔进了海里，说道：“对于那只海星来说，现在已经起作用了！”
